Cornwall, Ont. – Sunday, May 17, 2026 – Martin Belanger — The 57th season opener at Cornwall Motor Speedway delivered an action-packed evening as the Super DIRTcar Big Block Series headlined the program alongside the Battle on the Border Sportsman Series and the Battle for a Cure Mini-Stock Series on Les Entreprises ICM Night.
Justin Stone and Pete Britten led the field to green for the Spring Shootout 100 Super DIRTcar Series feature, with Britten jumping out front ahead of Stone and Jack Lehner. The first caution flew on lap 4 for Tim Sears Jr., but Britten remained strong on the restart as Alex Yankowski quickly moved into second. Another yellow slowed the field on lap 11 for Samuel Charland.
Britten continued to pace the field while Matt Sheppard cracked the top four by lap 15. As leaders began working through lap traffic, Yankowski used the outside lane to take the lead from Britten on lap 26, with Sheppard closing in as well. Yankowski stretched his advantage while Sheppard moved past Britten for second on lap 37.
A hard crash involving Tyler Dipple on the backstretch brought out the red flag on lap 39. On the restart, Yankowski maintained control ahead of Sheppard while current series points leader Mat Williamson climbed to third. At the halfway mark, the top five were Yankowski, Sheppard, Williamson, Jimmy Phelps, and Matt Stangle.
Williamson took over second from Sheppard on lap 52 and began tracking down Yankowski through heavy lap traffic. A caution for Steve Bernier on lap 75 tightened the field once again. Williamson used the high side to briefly take the lead with 23 laps remaining, but another caution for Jimmy Phelps with 15 laps to go reset the battle.
Felix Roy was charging toward the front before Justin Stone brought out another yellow with 12 laps remaining. Yankowski regained command in the closing laps and went on to capture his second consecutive Super DIRTcar Series victory ahead of Williamson, while Roy completed the podium.
The inaugural Battle on the Border Sportsman Series 35-lap feature began with Jeffrey Lapalme taking the lead over Brennan Moore and Sam Lajoie. Moore grabbed the top spot on lap 9 before contact with lap traffic collected both Moore and Lajoie one lap later.
Another multi-car incident on the restart involved Shane Pecore, Kent Miller, Drake Cartier, and Moore in front of the grandstands. Lapalme regained the lead with Jacob Nadeau and Tristan Ladouceur close behind. Nadeau found momentum on the outside groove and powered past Lapalme on lap 15.
From there, Nadeau pulled away while an intense battle for second unfolded between Lapalme, Ladouceur, and Dylan Kirkland in the closing laps. A late caution by Christopher Cordeau with one lap remaining set up a green-white-checkered finish. Nadeau stayed strong on the restart to win the first-ever Battle on the Border Sportsman Series event over Lapalme and Ladouceur.
In the Battle for a Cure Mini-Stock 25-lap feature, Xavier Metivier grabbed the early lead ahead of Charles Marchand and Pierre Picard. An early caution for Carl Gorry on lap 2 slowed the pace, but Metivier remained out front ahead of Marchand and Sebastien Raymond-Beauregard.
Marchand eventually took the lead before another caution on lap 6 forced him to the pits, handing the lead to Raymond-Beauregard. He then built a comfortable advantage over Aiden Fletcher and Cody Sager as cautions continued to slow the race.
A strong battle for second developed between Fletcher, Sager, and Emily Massy before a red flag was displayed for Steven Boies following a rollover incident. Due to curfew restrictions, the event was declared official after 17 laps.
The action continues next Sunday, May 24, with the Battle on the Border Pro-Stock Series, the Vintage division, and a complete racing program. The action continues next Sunday, May 24 with the Battle on the Border Pro-Stock Series along with the Vintage and a complete program.
